There is so much to do and the fact of the matter is that you probably won’t have enough time to do it all! This is why it is a good idea to do some research on the top things to do in Melbourne and prioritize the things you want to do. This will help you make the most of the time you have to explore this fabulous city.

So, have a read below at the top five things to do when travelling in Melbourne:

  1. Federation Square

If you like your art, then you should definitely head on over to Federation Square. It is pretty much in the heart of the city as well, so you can easily go to other places in the city. It is right across the road from Flinders Street Station, which is one of the most iconic stations in Melbourne. The modern art contrasted by the traditional buildings is something to be admired.

  1. Tram Ride

Melbourne is famous for its trams, there are trams everywhere you go and while it can take a little time to get used to the trams on the road, it won’t take long until you are an expert. One of the things you should do when you are in the city is take a tour on the City Circle tram. While some of the trams are advanced and have all the modern technology attached, the City Circle trams are what trams used to look like, and if you are just travelling around the city, Melbourne has a free tram zone, which means you won’t have to pay anything for the ride!

  1. Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup is known in Australia as the race that stops the nation, and it is even a public holiday for the Victorian residents! The Melbourne Cup is the biggest horse race of the year in not only Australia but it also attracts an international audience as well. It is held on the first Tuesday of November every year, so if you are in Melbourne at that time, it is certainly worth considering attending. If you do end up going, make sure to your Melbourne Cup tips before heading out, so you can (hopefully) place a winning bet.

  1. Yarra River Cruise

The Yarra River is one of the main rivers in Melbourne, and while it may not look good enough to swim in, it certainly is good enough for a little cruise! There are many different options if you want to cruise on the river, anywhere from a basic cruise, to something more elaborate that includes drinks and a meal. Because the Yarra River is so long, you will be able to see a number of different sites on your journey.

  1. Melbourne Cricket Ground

Melbourne is known as Australia’s biggest sporting city, and for good reason too, a number of the top sporting events each year take place in Melbourne, and Melbourians are crazy for their sport. As was already previously mentioned, the Melbourne Cup is hosted in November each year, but throughout the year there are other events like the Australian Football League (AFL) and cricket, that all take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The MCG is steeped in sporting history, and if you love your sport, then this is certainly a must. Even if there aren’t any sporting events on, the MGC museum is something you should check out.
